Ingredients For Cheddar Baked Biscuits Recipe

Homemade Cheddar Biscuits Recipe with Chilies (2)
  • Flour: The base of our biscuits provides structure and texture; all-purpose flour works best for fluffy, light bites.
  • Baking Powder: This crucial leavening agent ensures our biscuits rise to golden, pillowy perfection.
  • Salt: Just a pinch to balance and enhance the savory cheesiness of the biscuits.
  • Butter: Freezing and grating the butter ensures even distribution, leading to delightful flaky layers in every mouthful.
  • Chiles: Chopped for a zesty kick that contrasts beautifully with the rich cheese; adjust the amount according to your heat preference.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Sharp cheddar cheese, shredded for that irresistible melt and bold flavor in every biscuit.
  • Buttermilk: Adds a slight tang and moisture to the biscuits, creating a tender crumb that pairs perfectly with the heat of the chilies.
  • Butter (for topping): A final brush of melted, cooled butter provides a glossy finish and extra richness to these savory treats.

Substitutions and Variations

  • Use sour cream instead of the buttermilk for a thicker, richer biscuit.
  • If you are not a fan of spicy biscuits, remove the chilies from these biscuits.
  • For a creamier texture, brush the biscuits with melted butter before baking.
  • For added flavor, you can also top these spicy cheese biscuits with fresh parsley, green onions, cilantro, and other herbs.

Recipe Tips

  • If your dough is too sticky, add a bit more flour.
  • For the best results, make sure not to overmix the dough, or your biscuits will have tough biscuits.
  • If your dough is too dry, add a bit more buttermilk.
  • Don’t use cold butter to brush on the top, as it won’t spread well and can damage the biscuit dough.
  • Use a cookie scoop or a measuring cup to portion the dough for uniform biscuits.
  • To ensure fluffy biscuits, handle the dough as little as possible. Overworking the dough can result in a denser texture.
  • Allow the biscuits to cool slightly on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. This will help them set while maintaining their bottom crispness.
  • When adding the buttermilk, pour it in gradually and stop when the dough is combined to prevent a runny mixture.
  • For extra-crispy biscuits, increase the oven temperature by 25℉degrees Fahrenheit and reduce the cooking time slightly, keeping an eye on the color to avoid burning.

Storing Tips

These biscuits can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

To freeze, let them cool completely after baking. Then, wrap each biscuit individually in plastic wrap and place them in a zip-lock freezer bag, squeezing out as much air as possible. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy, there’s no need to thaw; simply reheat directly from frozen.

Reheating is simple. Place the frozen biscuits on a baking sheet and warm them in a preheated 350 degrees Fahrenheit oven for about 20 minutes or until they are heated through and regain a crisp exterior.

For a quicker method, microwave on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute, but be aware this may not preserve the crispness as well as oven heating. For the best taste and texture, the oven method is recommended.

Serving Suggestions

Cheddar biscuits are deliciously versatile and complement a range of dishes. Serve them alongside a steaming pot of Instant Pot Potato Leek Soup or Irish Inspired Ground Beef Stew for a comforting meal.

For breakfast, try slicing them in half and layering them with bacon, eggs, and cheese for a hearty sandwich or with some .

They also make an excellent side forbarbecue meals, soaking up flavorful sauces and juices.
