Creamy Grape Salad Recipe (2024)

This creamy Grape Salad with cream cheese sauce and topped with walnuts is one of our favorites. It is always a popular dish at parties and potlucks.

Creamy Grape Salad Recipe (1)

I have tried a lot of Grape Salad recipes and variations, but this Creamy Grape Salad recipe is by far the best yet.

Whenever I am in a time crunch to make a fast pot luck dish, I always turn to this recipe because it’s easy, fast, and everyone raves about it.

Not only that, but it requires no oven, making it perfect for a hot summer day.

We are always getting together as a family and we love having a big variety of side dishes to enjoy.

Another favorite salad recipe is our Strawberry Jello Fluff salad. It’s absolutely amazing!

The perfect grapes:

Many times people will ask how we know what the best grapes are. Let me tell you a little secret: the only way to know is to test them.

Yes- test them before you buy them.

I’m not saying to eat a whole bag of grapes at the grocery store, but I have seen other people (myself included) pick just one grape off the stem and try it.

I have tried the tricks the internet says about the perfect size and color, but I have found just a little sample gives me a better idea of what I am purchasing.

Is this illegal? I don’t know. But nobody has stopped me yet.

So I will continue taste testing my grapes until I am stopped. Washed or not, I want to know what I am buying!

How to make the Grape Salad Cream perfect:

Cream cheese can be a difficult ingredient to work with. I have found this recipe to work best when I let my cream cheese soften a little bit.

I usually let it sit on my counter for 25-30 minutes before I begin to work it into my recipe. This allows it to soften and blend a little easier. It also keeps the cream from getting bumpy and difficult to work with.

Once you start working your sour cream and cream cheese together, they should smooth out, especially when the sugar gets added.

You can use a hand mixer (I love this Hamilton Beach Mixer), but I have found when you over-beat the mixture, it loses its creamy texture and becomes more liquid than intended.

Once it is looking creamy without any lumps, fold in the pecans, vanilla and brown sugar. Add the grapes and fold the mixture until evenly combined.

Garnish with extra brown sugar and pecans. Place in the fridge and keep cold until ready to serve.

If you have made this ahead of time, don’t add the garnish until you are about to serve it. Otherwise the pecans might get soft or the brown sugar might melt into the cream and lose it’s attractive appearance.

Healthier alternatives in our Creamy Grape Salad:

I know what you are thinking… sour cream with grapes? Trust us on this one, these flavors complement each other and just seem to work.

However, we do understand that sour cream isn’t the most healthy option, but there is an alternative ingredient: plain Greek yogurt.

Plain Greek yogurt is full of protein and way less fat and calories than sour cream, but they taste almost identical.

This recipe does use cream cheese, so if you are looking for a healthier alternative, you will love our Honey Lime Fresh Fruit Salad, or our Greek Yogurt Fruit Salad. If you are looking for a creamy fruity treat then our Berry Cheesecake Fruit Salad is perfect for you!

Is this Creamy Grape Salad a salad, dessert or both?

This has been a running debate in our family for years. Some people say this is more of a dessert, while others claim this Grape Salad to be a side dish. I say, why not both?

This recipe could easily be a dessert with the sweet taste, but you could also liven up a meal by having it as a side. The choice is up to you, but either way I don’t think anyone will be complaining.

We usually make it as a side dish for pot lucks or big family dinners because it does feed a good amount of people.

Make Creamy Grape Salad ahead of time:

Unlike many other side dishes, this recipe requires no heat or baking.

You could easily make this dish a day in advance and it would taste just as good, if not better, on day two. Making it ahead of time may also depend on your choice of fruit.

I’ll let you in on a little secret: if you don’t have grapes you can easily substitute them for a different fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries, or even apples. The possibilities are endless!

Make this dish your own using your favorite fruit, or even a combination of fruits. I am dying for peach season to get here, because I know this recipe would go perfect with peaches.

This sounds awesome, but I'm thinking of making it without the sugar. Do you think it would make too much of a difference without it?

  2. sherie says:

I am going to make the grape salad with splenda and will post how it turns out. So far splenda has worked in all the recipes I have made. Can not wait to try.

It won't be as sweet but will probably still be ok. We have only made it as the recipe directs.

My kids would love this recipe, but my daughter is allergic to pecans. Is there something I can substitute in for the pecans?

  12. Cyd says:

You could easily add walnuts or just leave out the nut all together. You could even add granola crumbles on top.

  13. kim says:

Yes, this is great with granola

  14. Lilise says:

I have used almonds and it was great!
